MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD PT1

Hello blog!

We’ve talked about the cover and table contents of a magazine, so let’s talk about another part of it; double page spreads. But why are these pages so important to a magazine? This are very important as most of the time cover the main article. We know this because whatever it’s about is in the cover. Therefore by having it in the cover it’s anticipated which is why it’s so important to get it right.

Some of the elements that should include are:
  1. Headline
  2. Kicker
  3. Body text
  4. Drop capital
  5. Byline
  6. Subheadings
  7. Pull quotes
  8. Images
  9. Captions
  10. Folio
  11. Gutter
In red you’ll see these elements being in used in the template that I created.

Headline:
This is usually the big text in the top of a magazine. This helps readers where the story begins. These tittles have to be short and simple to drag out the audience. As you can see from the image above it’s the biggest text in the spread. Which also bleeds across both of the pages.

Kicker:
A magazine kicker is used to introduced the topic of the magazine article. It links the headline, subheading and what is to come in the article. The kicker should he around 30-50 words. This is sometimes  below the subheading to make it more put together but this is the editors choice of where they want it.

Body text:
This is the most lengthy an packed part of the magazine. This is the actual article what readers are anticipating to find interesting and engaging. In any point of the magazine you want to read the audience that’s why there’s so many elements to make it interesting. The article should be the first  to be added as it takes a lot of space everything else should be added after.

Drop capital:
This is what initiates the article, the big capitalized word makes the audience understand that the article is beginning. And beside it is body text to continue the article.Another method is no indentation on the first paragraph. If a writer doesn’t want to capitalize the first letter then no indentation also gives the idea that it’s the first paragraph. This is usually not recommend as it makes the page look less captivating.

Byline:
This is the name of the writer who wrote the article. This is used to accredit them. This should be in a smaller font but not as small as the body text. A small font is used as this is not really important to the reader but more not acknowledgement for the writer.

Subheading:
This is used to breakdown the headline into different sections which gives insight into what the paragraphs will talk about. This should be just a little bigger than the body text so the readers distinct between the two. These are not as important to have but it’s an authors choice to have them.

In the next blog I’ll talk about the other 5 elements left in the list, see in the next blog!

ANALYZING A TABLE OF CONTENT

 Hey blog!

In todays blog I’m going to breakdown a table of contents. This page comes from the magazine “Teen Vogue” from the issue September 2011. To the right you can see that I have labeled everything I knew a table of magazines should have. To label it I have used everything I learned while doing my research.

First let’s look at the things at the top. We see the masthead, the date and the cover story page number. Like I previously mentioned the mastheads tells us, the reader, whose magazines this is. We known it’s Teen Vogue. It’s writing in its usual font and color. To empathize that they want people to recognize the brand. It also makes the readers connect that this is also a part of Vogue magazines. As “teen” is written in a different font and “Vogue” is written in the font that Vogue uses across all their magazines. Also we see the date which we know around which time this magazine came out. This is written in smaller text which is not very important yet it’s informative to the reader. Not much can be said about a date other than that’s it’s just used to keep track of the magazine as they come out. Now we see a page number being basically highlighted by a red background and important to mention that it also has a red heart around. First let’s talk about the red background of it. It’s clearly very important to not only be separated from where the page numbers are so we can connect that this is the cover story. It also has a heart around it which definitely means something important to the reader or the writers.

But before we dig a little deeper into the hearts, let’s talk about the middle. We see headings, the tittle, and a big image the almost covers the whole page. The headings are bolded making them stand out to our eyes. Usually when we something bolded we tend to read that first which is why it’s so important to be clear and entertaining. This headings have to be like this so that our audience is always engaged, we don’t want to bore our readers with unimportant information. The tittle of the page is “Fashion and Features” which is very different that your usual tittle “Table of Contents”. Since this is a teens magazine they don’t want to read things that they’ve seen before so by changing the tittle it makes it more unique and fun. We know it’s a table of contents  and readers don’t need to be reminded that it is. Lastly, something that you can’t miss is the big image of singer “Taylor Swift”. Let’s talk a little about her background in the image. We see she’s in some sort of school since there are school supplies around her and a board with one of her song lyrics in the back. This picture is taken from a long angle as she is sitting down and it shows her full body. The purple dress she’s wearing makes her sort of stand out out of all the beige. This picture cover almost all of the background meaning she is definitely what the cover story is about which is why it’s also very close to the page number 96.

The bottom half of this magazine page has the article details, page numbers and some of the little hearts. The details feature one or two sentences max. Long paragraphs won’t cut it as they wouldn’t even fit or can be just way too much weight on the overall look of the page. We are trying to draw out readers to make them feel safe inside this pages and relate, having too much words wouldn’t make them interest to go and read the full article. We also see how the page numbers stand out in the red color which is used as the background for the cover page to make everything match. These are a little bigger than the heading and the details making them easier to read and to look for at quick glance. Now let’s look at the Inter sing hearts on the page. These hearts are out of the ordinary or just the authors choice to put them in. But this can mean various things like it could be the celebrities favorite articles, they could be the most fascinating stories, the most liked by the editors, or articles that connect in some way. This hearts definitely make an impression on young viewers, this can tempt them to look at those articles just because of the little hearts. Overall there is a lot to notice about this table of content by just breaking it down.

MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENT

Welcome back to the blog!

Today I’m going to talk another really important part of a magazine; the table contents. I've previously talk about house styles and analyzed a cover using everything learned from research. Well today I’m going to do something similar.

A magazines table of content is where you can find the page numbers for the information you are looking for. Sometimes they might be overlooked because they aren’t as important as the actual magazine. But for a writer it is very important to get everything right and make sure it blends in with the rest of the magazine. This page can be done however a writer feels like this can be done is so many different ways which makes it all more unique. A table of contents has the name of the magazine, the issue or volume number, an image, headings, article information, and of course the page numbers.

All magazines want to be recognized so it’s no mistake to have their tittle on the table of contents. Not only does this make the magazine more visually appealing but it makes it more put together and it gives us the understanding that the creators know what they are doing. The tittle is not usually as big as it is in the cover but it’s big enough to be seen right away. Now the issue or volume number on the other hand are placed in where you can’t really see them. This is because readers don’t really care about this, it’s more for the creators to keep things in order, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t important as this can help collectors too. But another  thing very visible is an image  in the table of contents. This is to keep readers entertained and not just look at a page with a bunch on words. The whole purpose of magazines is to look at the interesting images as they are reading which just having words makes the reader not follow along. Although sometimes it can have quotes this have a different color other than the main one being used. But using pull quotes doesn’t really intrigue people as much as visuals do. And if this page doesn’t have an I image or a pull quote it would make it up by using different colors that can make it stand out.

Now look deeper into the writing that goes on in a table of contents.  So of course the page has to have the tittle table of contents so people can know what exactly is what they are looking at. Headings are very important readers can easily find what they what to read by knowing the tittle of it. Headings are usually bolded or in a visible font color. Somewhere close to it should be the article information. This can also help readers known if they want to dig in and read that article, nobody can force the readers to read the articles but one can help them understand why it could be entertaining to read. This is a fun way to get viewers engaged also. And lastly, something that can’t be forgotten, the page number. This also has to be close to the article information and the heading as this the guide that would be used to locate everything in the magazine.

In the end result the table of contents should look something like the picture to the left. Now it’s obvious that every magazine doesn’t follow this template but it’s just a general idea of what should be included. There is endless possibilities as to how to create a table of contents which is why I think magazines can never run out of style. Although it is the more simplest tasks while creating a magazine it’s still a pretty big part of a magazine. I’m no expert of creating magazines but as a consumer who sees and buys magazines this is what I expect to see when I turn the cover page.

I hope you enjoyed todays blog and learned as much as I did while doing my research, come back for the next blog where I’ll breakdown the table of contents of a famous magazine!

MAGAZINE GENRES PT2

Welcome back!

Besides special, general and professional interest magazines there are other more known genres of magazines. Today I’m going to talk about six of them and how a writer can use one genre and break it done into different topics.

Let’s say you are writing a magazine about cooking. Well this is a very versatile topic as it can be molded into different things. One can talk about what chefs are wearing on the job to make their cooking easier. They can talk about the ingredients and recipes. The different utensils used. Now for a sports magazine they can also talk about various things. For example, what teams are most popular or rising in fame. They can also talk about specific players and their life. They can talk about the different sportswear and brands they use. So within this sub topics there are even more topics that can be talked about. With a genre you can never run out of things to talk about which is what makes magazines so popular and entertaining.

Fashion magazines are well known for anyone who has ever even looked at a magazine. Fashion magazines can talk about different modeling shows.  One can talk about models and then what they like to wear. It can talk about how fashion has changed over the years
. They can also talk about specific fashion designers and their work. Now for health magazines there’s many research’s happening around the world and they want to inform people about this. They can talk about different diseases. Or even talk about different professionals who have helped evolve the world of medicine. They can talk about how to get into different medical professions. And also healthy habits one can implement in their life. The possibilities are endless, just one word can trigger a world full of knowledge and magazines bring that to use in just a few pages.

Entertainment magazines can also have lots of things that can interest large audiences’. For example, they can talk about then latest trends on different social medias. Different things happening around singers or actors. They can also talk about different activities that readers can do either at home or outside. They also talk about different places to go. Also include didn’t books that can expand the knowledge. A may even include different movies or songs that the public might want to look into. And lastly let’s talk about news magazines. News is all around so there’s no mistake in not finding something worth peoples time. They can talk about what’s happening in other countries. Different news surrounding the environment and how that impacts us. Can also inform readers on information that they might have not known before.

I think having different genres really inform or just entertain readers. Having different things to talk about makes us human and reading those same kind of ideas makes us relate more to magazines.

MAGAZINE GENRES PT1

Welcome back!

For today we are going to be talking about different magazine genres. Some of these genres include cooking, sports, fashion, and health. For magazines to reach the right target there are three different: General interest, Special interest and Professional magazines.

  • General interest: This categories is written for a general audience. This can include food, fashion, entertainment, sport or home and gardening. This are available in grocery stores and they have a glossy cover with bold tittles, articles, graphics, and different advertisements. Some popular examples include the People, Time and You magazine.
  • Special interest: This type of magazines cover a more specific topic to a particular audience. For example a sport magazine solely focused on baseball. Although it's in the topic of sports baseball is the only sport they are bringing information to. Some of this magazines include History, National Geographic and Cosmopolitan.
  • Professional magazines: These kinds of magazines are targeted to different professional individualsThey are similar to special interest magazines except these are targeted to professional individuals. This include Money, Forbes, and Boston Top 10.
On the next blog I’m gonna breakdown some other magazine genres, see you in the next blog!

ANALYZING A MAGAZINE COVER

Hey blog!

Today we are going to analyze the cover of a magazine by Cosmopolitan Magazines. We are going to breakdown everything in it that makes it a magazine and other things that we can notice just by the cover. I will use everything I’ve learned about covers to have more understanding on how to create a cover for my magazine.

To start off just from looking at the cover we can see a color scheme of black, yellowish colors and some blues. This can be used to appeal to the audience. We see a lot of sunset colors sort of summer colors also. So we can also tell that it was a chill and cool vibe that may put readers at ease and interested in reading the magazine.

Also talking about audience let’s figure out who the target audience is. So in the cover there’s clearly a well known celebrity which can appeal to women or teens more than men. Also let’s considering that Cosmopolitan is a magazine targeted to women. But sometimes this magazine would cover male celebrities in their cover and talk about their life or anything that relates to them. I did notice as I was doing my research I found that this articles can be more interested to women and teens since men aren’t really interested about celebrity issues. So this magazine cover is targeted for women and teens to look at since it’s most appealing to their likings.

Let’s move on to actually analyzing what we see in the magazine clearly, for example the masthead. As I research and previously stated that mastheads are now magazines are recognized by the public. These can bring in the readers to want to dig into the stories inside. The magazine I analyzed is famously known therefore people known about it and can infer if they want it or not. The case would be different if the heading would be placed differently, in lowercase or  if anything was slightly changed, meaning people wouldn’t be able to known that it’s that magazine. Another thing that can help remember what a magazine looks like is font and how it’s used. Because Cosmopolitan uses that same font for the tittle of all its magazines makes it easier to find. Also the font of the magazine kickers and article titles is placed in a fun and out place way. We can see that some of the words are bigger than others and that they have different colors too. This makes it appealing to look at, one can see the magazine with one glance and notice it’s variance of colors that just make the magazine pop.

The  main image is very important to the house style of a magazine. As we can see it’s a famous celebrity commonly known along teens and women. “Emma Chamberlain” is known as a YouTube personality. So by using someone known can also bring a lot of media attention which is good for the magazine company. But cover images not only have to have a celebrity they have to be interning . This can be achieved with good lighting and filters that can make the image more appealing. Magazine always have to bring something new and fresh to talk about so by bringing different celebrities they can appeal various demographics. This also brings us to the main article and other topics. So since there is a celebrity in the cover we can right away known that somewhere in the magazine there will be a particular article about her. Now people who like her or just known who she is would probably want to read whatever they say about her mainly out of curiosity this brings people in which is why it’s important to have an eye catching image. This articles also have to be interesting enough for the readers to keep wanting more from the magazine and also leave good reviews. That’s why they have to have interesting topics, they can’t be repetitive or else people get bored. And that’s what companies don’t want to have because it’ll decrease their income rates.

So everything in a magazine has to follow easy house style formats in order to bring readers in and continuing buying magazines.

HOUSE STYLE TYPES

Welcome back to the blog!

Today I wanted to talk about the different types of house styles in magazines. A house style is a standard for magazines to look. Although everybody has different way of creating magazines a house style helps keep the readers gaze on the magazine. All magazines should have a color scheme of at least three colors, a format that can be followed along and target specific audience.

One thing you might notice when looking at a magazine you can identify what company or brand it is. Because the constant use of house styles this makes it easier for people to recognize them and therefore they would be more susceptible to buy it. House styles make a magazine look more professional when you come across it.  For example, In this picture to the right I choose Vogue magazines from different countries. I thought that by choosing magazines from different places one can see how alike and memorable their magazines are, anyone across the globe can recognize what Vogue magazines look like even if they never bought one. Although this magazines have similar features, they have differences. Magazines would never talk about the same thing twice which is why people are attracted to them. The constant topics being talked about and its drawing cover  we see the constant use of white, black and variations of red. The big mastheading in the top makes Vogue recognizable around the world. It is almost impossible to think of vogue and not think of covers similar to this come to mind.

When creating a magazine one thing you must think about is what colors you are going to use. This should be used throughout the whole magazine. Three colors minimum should be used, if you were to use more than that the magazine wouldn't be as appealing. The constant difference in colors would make the magazine look all over the place and therefore readers wouldn't find it entertaining. Using different colors caused a constant change that would not make a magazine look professional and no one would go out of their way to buy a magazine that doesn't look well put together. Using three colors would allow the readers to follow along more easily.

Everything put into a magazine has to be done with a purpose. Using a format allows us to follow along with our eyes important or eye catching things with our eyes. A magazine should have a masthead, lead article, main image, issue and dateline, and supporting cover lines. Where the masthead goes is very important as it has the title of the magazine and this is where the readers would recognize it. The different supporting cover lines put across the magazine also have a purpose as it shows the different topics in a magazine. The main image gives the readers an insight as to what kinds of topics they are going to be talked about. For example, putting the picture of a celebrity gives the idea that they are going to talk about different things happening around celebrity like their films or music. And if the magazine had a picture of an animal you’ll know that it’s going to talk about anything dealing with the environment and nature.

Having a specific audience you’re targeting is crucial to a magazine. Knowing exactly who you are talking to helps you understand what kind of information you want them to see. The language used also is part of understanding your audience. For example, when talking to a young audience you particularly don’t want to include words that they might now understand, you have to use a language that can cause them to keep reading. If it’s adults then you know speaking to them with more knowledge would make them follow along. Another example is how contrasting women and men magazines are. Women magazine mostly talk about fashion, relationships, cooking, women health and celebrities. And men magazines usually talk  about sports, cars, and money. Although some magazines try to make any topic neutral it’s still very obvious that women and men magazines have mostly stayed in the same topics since they first began. Now for more general audience there’s magazine fully based on psychology, sciences or the environment it’s usually mostly targeted to one type of individual who genuinely know about the topic or are interested to learn about it. So in this case this are more neutral base targeted.

In the next blog I’ll analyze the house style of a different magazines, see you in the next blog!

    HISTORY OF MAGAZINES PT3

    Greetings blog!

For todays blog we are going to talk a little more about the history of magazines.

With the arrival of the 20th century it brought with it the use of advertisements. Before many magazines didn’t want to use advertisements because they thought it would drive away readers, but once it was put in place many people started to enjoy magazines even more. Advertisements were mainly working on female readers as they advertised products that may appeal to them and women are more susceptible to be influenced. Many magazines and the companies they collaborated with saw this as a win. Not only did they buy magazines but also increased the income of the companies involved or being advertised. The 20th first century also brought in a new wave of types of magazines like news, business, and picture magazines.

For example, in 1923 Time magazines, a magazine that focus on world news, became the first newsmagazine in the United States. They began to publish with the idea that “people are uninformed because no publication has adapted itself to the time which busy men are able to spend simply keeping informed (Encyclopedia Britannica)”. They became more popular around 1928 but in its early stages of publishing it struggled to keep readers engaged. Regardless of its efforts it’s still publishing to this day. This magazine effortlessly drove other publishing companies to create their own newsmagazines. Business week which was founded in 1929 also focused on the same views as Times. Another influential magazine at the time was Forbes which started publishing in 1917. They mainly focused on finance, “ Forbes is a global media company, focusing on business, investing, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, and lifestyle. (Forbes)”.

Photojournalism,  telling stories through pictures, became very popular around this time also. Using images was nothing new but as the innovation of photography evolved so did it’s popularity. For example Life by Henry Luce. They published magazines regularly between 1936 and 1972. It quickly rose to fame as it had 1 million of circulating magazines. It was a very popular magazines it captured readers attention right away since it was so similar yet it was so different from other magazines. People of all genders and ages would pay to read this magazine. And although many magazines tried to compete they couldn’t win against such an influential magazine that today is still running. Today, magazines have come a long way, they provide information and entertainment to people all around the globe. As of now technology has come into the plate and has since also changed magazines print. Articles and news are more easily accessible, therefore causing a disruption and decline in the magazine industry.

Many magazine publishers have either discounted or turned digital. Regardless of where people get their information it has come a long way to be what it is today.

    HISTORY OF MAGAZINES PT 2

    Welcome back to my blog!

Let's continue to talk about the history of magazines. Now we are going to talk about some magazines in Great Britain and the United States during the early 18th century.

As the 18th century approached one of the main magazines publishing in Great Britain was Sir Richard Steele's the Tatler. Although it was supplied as newspaper they were closer to magazines. Tatler focused on living and culture while also using humor to promote good behavior. This magazine along with another magazine popular at the time, Spectator, brought in a lot of female readers. And eventually Female Tatler was created in order to target their main audience.

As for America, the first magazine ever published was in 1741. Andrew Bradford and Benjamin Franklin both from Philadelphia were in the race of who would publish the first American Magazine.  Eventually Bradford claimed the honor of publishing it first. But regardless of their efforts Bradford's magazine met it's end only after three months and Franklin's after six. Some main reasons as to why they didn't succeed was that many people didn't have time to read and they were worth a lot of money. But this was an attributing factor for magazines to become more popular in America. By the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century there were around one hundred magazines in the United States. As the use of print became more in demand the cost of it eventually declined and therefore this caused a vast majority to be able to afford it. This began for publishers to take in to consideration their new audience, they now offered family, children and women magazines. A very popular magazine for women, Godey's Lady's Book, began publishing around 1830 to 1898. Since this magazine was target just for women they hired around 150 women.

A magazine that published for the longest time during this century was The Saturday Evening Post. It first began printing in 1821 and rose to popularity in 1855. With 90,000 copies circulating per year. They were the first publication to put artwork on their cover. And with this great advantage that clearly was working they featured the art of many famous artists like Norman Rockwell. This then increased the numbers of the magazine and people in American recognized cover and were always looking forward for a new issue. Another magazine that was popular at the time was Youth's Companion. It published from1827 to 1929 when it merged with The American Boy. It was fairly religious and it began to create a reputation for young readers to have traits of excellence. By late 19th century advertisements became a very crucial part of magazines. At first magazine companies didn't want to put advertisements in their magazines because they wanted readers to focus on the literature and writings. But once they added them into the magazines and therefore raising profitability for both the companies advertised and the magazines.

On the next blog I'll talk about how magazines evolved in the 20th century, see you in the next blog!
