MAGAZINE PRODUCTION

Welcome back to the blog!

I've been researching a lot of things that go into a magazine, but what happens after? how are these magazines published and printed? So todays blog would focus on this. So we can learn together this important stage so that we understand how magazines go from an idea to being in stores.

There are three major parts about publishing a magazine: production, printing and distribution.

When first even thinking of creating a magazine one should think of its purpose. You want to know what you will talk about, the audience that you want to bring and will your magazine be physical or digital. There's a lot to consider and a lot to plan. After you've done some brainstorming. think  of who you want to publish and whos going to be part of you team. For example you need writer, editors, a sales managers, marketing manager, publication manager, and a partnerships. Now onto design your magazine. You need to be aware of things like house style types, how to writer articles, and how to appeal to audiences. You of course need to make a lot of revisions and drafts to come up with the best choice to publish. Don't forget about visuals, and how make them coincide with your magazine.

Next step is printing your magazine.
After production make sure that your magazine can be printed like how the publishing company wants it as different companies have different characteristics on how they want their magazines. A production manager looks at the final preparations for the magazine to be printed. The production manager would also gather the advertisements papers as they are not made by the company but rather who they is being advertise is. Before any printing is done you have to schedule press time, ordered paper and made any preparations that is needed for printing. and when this is all received then the printing can commence. a proof is made to make sure any errors are changed and the publishers have to sign off it. Once this is done then the printing company starts making the magazine in large quantities. When this is done then the pages will be folded, trimmed, and  bound.

The last step is distribution. A circulation director is the one to handle how to get the magazines into the hands of the readers. But most large magazine companies have in house circulation. This is where they keep track of subscriptions and to accommodate how the subscribers get their magazines. All magazines have to have a making address, bar codes and whatever needed for second class mailing. For single copy sales, circulation directors work with national distributors to spread these magazines. These would be going out all over the country. What a wholesaler, a person or company that sells products to retailers, would send them to supermarkets and convenience stores. After that magazines can be circulation in all the nation and that’s where us, the readers get our magazines.

Overall, to create a Magazine there are three steps to follow in order to be successful. Which are production, printing and production. These are important to get magazines to a readers hands.

Thanks for reading the blog, see you in the next!

MAGAZINE DEMOGRAPHICS

Hello, blog!

Today I’m going to talk about magazine demographics. Understanding who reads magazine is very important for a company to know. They want to appeal to the right audience so that their magazine keeps increasing in income. Let’s see the percentages of how women and men are liking magazines these days.

About 90.4% of adults read magazine media. This is a huge percentage that a few decades ago might’ve seen impossible. It is very impressive to see how widespread magazines have become. In a survey it was found that 84% of women read magazines and 75% of men read at least 1 of 135 magazines that they were shown. This shows at least more than half of both genders read magazines. One interesting fact to mention is that for men’s magazine they are read by 45% of men and 20% of women. And for women’s magazines 71% is by women and 31% is by men. This is intriguing but it’s normal to be curious about what the opposite genders magazines are about.

In 2019 the U.S printed around 43.3 millions magazines. This are big numbers considering the rise digital magazines. No one can deny that physical magazines will be going out of business anytime soon.  And supporting that, there is around 33.2 million circulation magazines in the U.S alone. To this day physical magazines still manage to grab a readers attention. It has a large audience still buying physical magazines which might seem impossible with how many things are online and at our disposal. Besides it’s high printing they are also the this most trusted source of information. Around 87% of magazine readers trust what they read on.

I talked about physical magazines but lets dive a little deeper into digital magazines.  Well, around 34% of adults read magazines on their mobile devices. This highlights its increase from previous decades but physical copies are still being printed and bought in large amounts. And those who read magazines online sound around 50 minutes a day per month reading these magazines. On the other hand around 70% of women alone prefer reading magazines physically. They enjoyed flipping through pages, seeing everything on paper rather than a screen.

Women are more likely to read magazines about fashion, beauty, fitness, health and entertainment. And contrasting men are more prone to read magazines about science, technology, sports, and cars. But between genders and races the most popular topics are celebrities, health and cooking/food. This topics seem to thrive in magazines. An example of this is “Readers Digest”, which has the highest monthly magazine print audience. It has a total of 19,438,000 printed magazines.

In conclusion, magazines are most liked my women but there is still a large audience of men who like to read magazines.

ANALYZING A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD PT2

Hey blog!

So I talked about some of the elements in the double page spread and today I’m going to talk about the rest. All that’s left to analyze is image, secondary image, captions, folio and gutter. Let’s begin.

Images:
The image bleeds over both pages. It has one side with people in it while in the other side it seems like the image fades into black so that there could be writing on that side. I’m sure that wasn’t just luck but the image was edited for the writer to be able to type on the other side. The artist “Harry Styles” seems to be singing at one of his concert. He stands out with his yellow shirt, blue pants and brown shoes. This tells us that he is the central theme here, that he is what this magazine is about.

Secondary image:
These are images that support the main image. In this case this image is of an album cover. Which makes sense with the headline “WALKING THE LINE”. But this articles and headlines is more for people who are really into his music so they would understand better about what is going on. This image also uses blue which matches with the yellow, blue and black color scheme going on. I also noticed that since the image has a black background they used a white border so that it could be seen better.

Captions:
For the first image the background is in white to be seen over the black background. It’s better to use a bright color because a dark color would blend in with the background making it hard to read and easy to miss. The other caption also uses a being color, yellow. Although this is small we can still see it somehow and be able to read it in the. Magazine.

Folio:
In this spread the page number isn’t included but it doesn’t include the tittle of the section of the magazine. In the table of contents it had the name of the sections and the tittle of each article. And the one in left hand corner it’s this article sections tittle. It’s written in a corner so that it doesn’t bother the reader as this really isn’t important to see as they are reading. They already have an idea of what is in the magazine that tittle is just a reminder of what they are looking at.

Gutter:
This is the space that connects both page together. Around this space there shouldn’t be any writing because it would be harder to read the page folds there. Because of the gutter, the caption, pull quote and headline are written just a little far away from it because it would get lost if it is put there. I did notice that there is a white space between them but you can’t see it because it is use as a guide to paste the two pages together.

You may wonder why is there no subheading or byline. Well, from what I can tell there is no need for subheadings  as the article is just beginning and there isn’t much writing to begin with so putting subheadings would just make the page too heavy. And I’m assuming there is no byline because they already put it somewhere else in the magazine and they just felt there’s no need to reiterate on the rest of the magazine.

That’s it for the blog!

ANALYZING A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD PT1

 Hey blog!

Today I’m going to analyze a magazine double lane spread by music spotlight. I previously talked about double page spread so today we are going to look in depth of one. First things first in this blog we’ll talk about: headline, kicker, body text, drop capital and pull quote. So let’s begin.

Headline:
In the page the headline is divided to be seen across both pages. In one side it says “ WALKING” and the other it says “THE LINE”. Which is a similar tittle to the artists album “Fine Line”. This headline is written in all capital letters highlighting that the article would be based on the artists new album. It also is underlined with a yellow line which is similar to the yellow shirt of the artist.

Kicker:
The kicker is written below the headline in blue. This is a smaller font size as it sort of hides in the image. But it still stands out by its bright blue color. This kicker is written across two lines which makes it short and simple to read.

Body text:
This body text has a white color to be able to be seen since the background is completely black. It is written within two column and continues onto the other pages. Each paragraph is being indented to make it easier to read. The paragraphs aren’t too big or packed with information. Instead they are being broken down to ease readers into the article.

Drop capital:
This is the big capital letter in white. This makes the article stand out. The drop cap bring readers in with how different size it is from the rest of the article. It overall makes the reading experience more fun for the audience as it adds something different to the rest of the page.

Pull quote:
The pull quote is written in white which can be a little hard to read since where it is located there’s a lot going on in the background. But it does include a quotation mark Symbol in a solid blue background to make it easier to read and also stand out. The blue is different from the colors of the image which makes it clear to use that there is a quote being written in the page. The name of the person in the quote is also written in the same blue color as the symbol and the kicker, which ties things together.

On the next blog I’ll continue to breakdown with double page spread, that’s all for today’s blog!

MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD PT2

Welcome back blog!

Let’s continue to talk about the elements that one encounter as they look at a double page spread. In the previous blog I began to talk about six of them one in the list so in todays I’ll talk about the test.

    Which are as followed:
  • Pull quotes
  • Images
  • Captions
  • Box copy
  • Folio
  • Gutters

In red you’ll see these elements being in used in the template that I created.

Pull quote:

A pull quote is a quote that divides between text. This is used to help the reader focused on the magazine. If one just reads words after words they might lose interesting. Also pull quotes can give insight into the article. Some magazines would use image to further help others would grab a quote from the same article to empathize their purpose.

Images:
A magazine could have one or more pictures in one full spread. The main image has to be the biggest one, this is the one viewers would see as they turn the page. This picture has to have good lighting
, a not too busy background and interesting enough to be the biggest picture. The secondary images are used to support the main image.

Captions:
These are used to provide information about the article or credit of who took the photo. It should describe the image in basic words so that it doesn’t drag attention from the image. These can also include fun facts to give more context.

Folio:
These consists of page number and the magazine name or logo. A folio is usually at the bottom right or left. This help readers navigate through the magazine to find the article they want to read.

Gutters:
This is where the one page begins and another ends. This divides them and should be left without text so that it isn’t disrupted when the page is printed. We don’t want to loose the any information or annoy the readers to try and understand what is in that space.

Learning about double page spread was really interesting, thank you for reader the blog, see you in the next one!
