FINAL DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

Welcome back to the blog!

Last time on the blog I presented my final table of contents now I’m going to show my final double page spread. So here’s the final product:

Explanation:
  1. I added a background image, having a plain background looks bland and not interesting. So I put a picture of my model looking at the sky.
  2. So on the left some things changed. The image is still the main focus of the side. The title “Eterna” I removed it because it took away focus from the image.
  3. The heading I also changed the color to white. The black wasn’t as bright and therefore difficult to see. I changed the font to London so that things ate consistent.
  4.  The piece of the article, was taken out I didn’t like how it looked. Instead I put the whole article on one side.
  5. Not onto the right side, I compel changed it. I thought there was too many images and it looked way too much to focus on. I also got rid of the bubbles and instead put regular captions
  6. The article is in white now and is separated into column which is something that was missing from the draft.

Thanks all for the blog, see you on the next blog!

FINAL TABLE OF CONTENTS

Welcome blog!

Now it’s time to show how another important part of the magazine looks like. I think there is some changed but for the most part it stayed the same. So here’s what the final table of contents looks like:

Explanation:
  1. The background color changed. From pink to purple to gray to light pink and not marble. I changed it because my group felt it was best if we all did different textures were white is the background. So I landed with this marble not only because it goes with my color palette (pastels) but because it’s light enough to let the pictures shine.
  2. As for the images I’m satisfied with them. Some of images I got rid of a lot of them because it was best to how one image per article rather than 2-3. This change was suggested by my group members so our magazines have the same house style.
  3. The names of my models changed as I wasn’t able to take a picture of them, but it all turned out alright. Overall I’m happy how it turned out.

Thanks for reading today’s blog, stay tuned for the final double page spread!

FINAL COVER

Hello blog!

In today’s blog I’m going to show my final magazine cover. It took a lot of editing and patience to get it done. So here’s the final product:

Explanation:
  1. For starters the tittle changed colors which is the only other writing with a different color. I did this so you can see it better since I put it behind my model.
  2. I made the choice to put the masthead behind the image to make my model stand out because I noticed that there is a lot of green in the background.
  3. Another thing I changed is the issue number and the date. I moved them to the left because in the right the white couldn’t be seen and I didn’t want to use black, it wouldn’t go with my color palette.
  4. The “ Find out Helen’s secret” I removed it an instead out something else. I modified it to “Take a look inside for makeup, skincare and clothing advice!”. The “6 captivating articles inside” was also changed, I put a quote that I used in the article instead. Vogue does a lot of quotes in their covers so it made sense to do something similar to my inspiration.
  5. As for the image in the draft, the girl is looking right at the camera but for my model I used a close up shot. As a group we collectively decided to practice different shots we learned. I’m doing close up shot, and the others are doing mid shot, long shot, and aerial shot. My model is blowing bubbles to the side. I did this because she is facing the inside of the magazine. If it was to the other side it would drive away from the inside and look less appealing.
  6. I moved her name from the left to the bottom right. I also changed the color to that of the masthead. If I had left it there it would be right on her face and disturb the image.

Thanks all for reading the blog, next I would show the final table of contents!

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD DRAFT

Welcome back!

Today I will show you what I have in mind for my double page spread. I created two drafts one with images from Canva and one with the images I took. The one from Canva served as a reference to be able to get an idea of what pictures to take. I expect to make some changes specially since I added the images.

So here’s the mock double page spread:

Here’s the double page spread draft:

When thinking about what the double page spread should look like I had no idea what to do first. I had a lot of ideas but none really stood out to me. So I decided to think back on what the magazine is about, what is it’s purpose. So since my magazine is mainly for teens I know that as a teen myself I look more to the images than the article itself. Therefore I wanted it to have images speak for the article. Although, I think I went overboard with the amount of images. So I’m going to cut down on some of the images and keep the important ones. I also added bubbles in the mock double page spread but then changed it to clouds. I wanted to use something out of the standard but I think it would look better just regular text. I hope the spread would look better after I make changes.

These were my inspiration:

TABLE OF CONTENTS DRAFT

Hello blog!

In today’s blog I’m going to talk about the table of content draft. For the table of contents I based it on Teen Vogue and Irish Tatler.  I did a mock table of contents and another draft with real pictures. I used images from Canva in order to get an idea of what the magazine would look like. And then went in and used my pictures for the other draft.

So this is the mock table of contents:

And here's the table of contents draft:

For the table of contents I wanted it to be fun and creative. Since it’s about fashion I wanted to be more visual. There’s a lot of pictures throughout it to show how it connects to the topic of the article. In the table of contents it includes five other articles. The numbers of the pages are in big letters and are inside bubbles. The circular means regular articles whilst the star ones emphasize the important articles. This also goes with the theme of reflection, as I mentioned previously I want to use bubbles throughout some pages of the magazine. I’m think of changing the color of the background since I think it’s too bright and doesn’t make the images standout. I do also plan on changing the images around so they are more spread out.

Here are some of my inspiration magazines:

Thanks for reading the blog, see you on the next!

COVER DRAFT

Welcome back!

In order to finalize the magazine I created a mock cover using pictures from Canva  and a cover draft using the pictures I took. I wanted to see what is  the best look for the magazine. My magazine is inspired by vogue which is why it’s simple but also has some writing around it. This would help me see what I need to change for the final cover.

Here’s the mock cover:

Here’s the cover draft:

When brainstorming what the cover should look like came up with different ideas. The first was a full body image. But I thought it didn’t fit with what the story is about. The next idea was my model , Helen Jurado, to hold a mascare brush near her eye and look like she’s applying it. I thought this weren’t as great ideas as I thought so I came up with  using bubbles and how they could mean reflection. Since the article reflects who my model is, I thought using bubbles in the cover and table of contents would connect with the story. I think the cover drafts are engaging but I feel like they are missing important parts so I’ll make the changes to it.

Here were my previous ideas:

This was the cover draft, stay tuned for the next blog with the draft table of contents!

FINAL FEATURED STORY

 Hello blog!

In a previous blog I wrote a draft for my feature story. That was the basis of what I wanted the article look like. I turned it and my teacher made some corrections. So here’s the finalize story!

On a day like no other a little girl walks into her parents' room. She knows where she's going, straight for her mother's makeup. She grabs some blush and puts it on her face. Her mom approaches, scolding her as she sees her daughter's face. The little girl was fascinated with makeup, she couldn't stay away from it. At the time she thought she was just curious, but now she realizes how it is a big part of her life. Helen Jurado has recently turned 18 and is ready to learn from the world of makeup.

Jurado has always been her own person, she said “I love to try new things in the comfort of my own home so there is not a specific audience I am looking for.” She describes her philosophy with beauty. “I just think women are just powerful beings like we can do anything” she said.  “I am glad that girls are not ashamed to be girly girls or to be tomgirls.” For Jurado, it is all about enjoying life and doing what feels right. She describes herself as intelligent, skillful and assertive. No one can stop her from being herself, to Jurado “You get to only live once and you have to get the most out of it.”
Being alone in her room is comforting and this is where she can really get into one of her favorite hobbies, makeup. Like anything, things can be difficult to learn, Jurado said “when I first began I did not know how to use the right brushes or knew the name of anything.” But this did not stop her from continuing one of her many passions. “Over the years, especially during Covid I had time to improve, and I have definitely come a long way.” She recalled. Now that she can look back, she can identify mistakes she made but also instances when she fell in love with makeup all over again. “To me the best looks are the ones you barely try for” she said while talking about her favorite looks.
Jurado has come a long way and has tips for anyone starting their makeup journey. Helen recommends using Korean skincare, in her words “I think they are absolutely amazing.” But she does advise beginning with regular products as skin must get used to the new routine. Through her journey, Helen has learned from Vogue Beauty Secrets. To her, one can never go wrong with “some blush, highlighter and eyeshadow and lip tint.” This is what she usually uses when at home. Obviously, Helen has different makeup looks for everything and never uses the same look twice. “I am always trying different products so I cannot possibly do the same thing twice.” She stated.
Someone as lively as her has many hobbies like horse riding and traveling. “Horses are one of my favorite animals, possibly the only animals I love as much as anything.” She feels very passionate about this hobby and so it is important to her. Besides this she also enjoys traveling. “I think since I am homeschooled, I have time for more travel…” and even when traveling she tries to incorporate her hobbies.
She loves to be outside with the sun and sky, it helps her reset. “I’m ready to be out there in the world and experience life.” Although she is a little afraid, she is ready to face anything head on.

That’s all for today’s blog. Hope you find the story interesting!

FEATURED STORY DRAFT

Welcome back blog!

In the previous blog I showed the interview for the featured story. So today I will show what I wrote, this is just a draft that later my teacher will revise and give her commentary on it. So here’s the draft:

Wearing makeup can be powerful, who cares what people think, at least for 18 Helen Jurado, this isn’t a problem.
Helen has always been her own person, she says “I love to try new things in the comfort of my own home so there isn’t a specific audience I’m looking for.” It’s never for show or for anyone. “I just think women are just powerful beings like we can do anything” she says. “I’m glad that girls are not ashamed to be girly girls or to be tomgirls.” For Helen, it is all about enjoying life and doing what feels right. She describes herself as intelligent, skillful and assertive. No one can stop her from being herself to her “You get to only live once and you have to get the most out of it.”
Being alone in her room is comforting and this is where she can really get into one of her favorite hobbies, makeup. Like anything, things can be difficult to learn, Helen says “when I first began I didn’t know how to use the right brushes or knew the name of anything.” But this didn’t stop her from continuing one of her many passions. “Over the years, especially during covid I had time to improve and I’ve definitely come a long way.” She recalls. Now that she can look back, she can identify mistakes she’s made but also instances when she fell in love with makeup all over again. “To me the best looks are the ones you barely try for” she says while talking about her favorite looks. Helen walks through memory lane remembering her mermaid inspired look.
But with experience comes wisdom and Helen has a lot to say. She has come a long way and has tips for anyone starting their makeup journey. Helen recommends using Korean skincare in her words “I think they are absolutely amazing.” But she does advise beginning with regular skincare as your skin must get used to the products. Through her journey Helen has learned from Vogue Beauty Secrets. To her you can never go wrong with “some blush, highlighter and eyeshadow and lip tint.” This is what she usually uses when home. But obviously Helen has different makeup looks for everything and never uses the same look twice. “I’m always trying different products so I can’t possibly do the same thing twice.” She states.
But someone as lively as her has many hobbies like horse riding and traveling. “Horses are one of my favorite animals, possibly the only animals I love as much as anything.” She feels very passionate about this hobby and so it is important to her. Besides this she also enjoys traveling. “I think since I’m homeschooled, I have time for more travel...” and even when traveling she tries to incorporate her hobbies. She loves to be outside with the sun and sky, it helps her reset.
As of now Helen recently turned eighteen and wants to enjoy her summer to the max.” I’m ready to be out there in the world and experience life.” Although she is a little afraid, she is ready to face anything head on.

So thats the draft, thank you for reading!

FEATURED STORY INTERVIEW

 Hello blog!

Today I will show the answers to the questions from the previous blog. For my magazine story I interviewed my friend Helen Jurado. I thought she would be perfect for my magazine as she fits what I’m looking for. She was away at the moment and so therefore this interview had to be done through a phone call.

1. When do you think your liking for makeup and skincare began?
I think it started from a very young age. I used to go on my mom’s  room and use her makeup. And she would scold me and tell me I was too young. But I had a fascination with makeup. As for skincare I recently got into it and it’s been a complete life changer. I found that having good skin is what makes your makeup look better.

2. Who is your biggest inspiration when it comes to makeup?
I guess my mom. She also really likes makeup and her skin has always been perfect, I guess it’s probably just genetics but her skin is super smooth. And honestly I love to do different looks and show her and she would always say how much she likes them even when I feel like they didn’t come out as well.

3.  Which would you say is your favorite look?
Out of all the looks I’ve done I feel like the normal looks are always best. But there is this one time I wanted to try something new and I did like my eyeliner differently. It was specially for Halloween I think and I made my eyeliner look like a spider. It was so cute. There is also this one time I was randomly practicing different looks. And to me the best looks are the ones you barely try for. And so I did this like a mermaid inspired look and it turned out so cute. But all the pictures I took didn’t do it Justice.

4. What are some products that you know work?
Ok so I’m super into Korean skincare. I think they are absolutely amazing. And there are so many products that I could talk about. But I will say they can get very expensive so I also use regular Walmart skincare. I think if you want your skin to get better it’s best to not use so many products or introduce so many products because your skin isn’t used to them.

5. How would you describe your femininity?
I think being feminine is a complex thing. Many women have strong auras while others have more charming auras. For example I knew this one girl who was so confident she would walk to a room and you would just admire her. For me I think I’m more calm and relaxed but sort of outgoing. I can be bold but it’s not all the time. People always say I’m always smiling and laughing so I do feel like my femininity is more quiet and timid but I do think a lot of people would disagree with that. They would say I’m bold and extroverted. I just think women are just powerful beings like we can do anything so I’m glad that girls are not ashamed to be girly girls  or to be tomgirls.

6. What are the words that describe you?
Intelligent, skillful, and assertive. I think I’m very smart and others as well like to compliment me on that. I do believe I’m very skillful. I like to learn new things. I feel like you get to only live once and you have to get the most out of it. And assertive because I can give criticism in a way that 's clear and I’m a very good speaker.

7. Would you consider makeup one of your favorite activities?
Oh no, as I said before I love to try new things. Although I love makeup and skincare I always like to do something out of my comfort zone. For example horse riding. Horses are one of my favorite animals, possibly the only animals I love as much as anything. I just have a way to communicate with them and horses like me like I can talk to them and they would be happy to be around me. Don’t get me wrong, I love animals. I think they are adorable but horses do have my heart. I also love stargazing. I know this isn’t a skill but I love to dry somewhere where there is no light pollution and just look up at the stars, it’s really soothing. Oh I also love love love traveling. I actually have plane tickets to visit my brother soon which I’m really excited about.

8. How much do you think you have improved in this activity?
With makeup oh I’ve improved tremendously like when I first began I didn’t know how to use the right brushes or knew the name of anything. I was confused on what foundation and concealer was. I used to do my eyebrows really weird and it didn’t match my color at all. But I think over the years specially during covid I had time to improve and I’ve definitely come a long way.

9. Which color palettes do you think looks best on you?
I think I look best in pastels and I think it ranges. If it’s like a regular day and I’m going out colors can be neutral and light. But if it’s a party and it’s at night I would use darker tones. But since I wear pastels and lighter colors most of the time I would say those colors look best on me.

10. Do you have a busy schedule, if so, how do you manage to fit in your favorite hobbies?
I think since I’m homeschooled I have time for more travel so my schedule is busy. I usually travel a lot which I’m grateful for of course. And when I’m home I use that time to do my hobbies like makeup and horse riding. But also when I’m traveling I also find ways to incorporate those activities into my week once or twice.

11. Would you say you have specific makeup looks for different occasions?
Definitely. I love to look at makeup and skincare tutorials. For example Vogue secrets I love to learn different tips from famous gorgeous people. So if I’m home I’ll do some blush, highlighter and eyeshadow and lip tint. But if I’m going out with friends I go a little more bold but also calm. And if I’m going to Walmart or the mall I’ll try a more natural look. And of course it varies. I try not to do the same thing twice when I’m out. I’m always trying different products so I can’t possibly do the same thing twice.

12. What are your plans for the summer?
To have fun honestly. I recently turned eighteen and I’m ready to be out there in the world and experience life. There's still a few things I’m afraid of but I think I can learn to conquer them. This summer I want to focus on my happiness. Past years I’ve had a lot of things going on and now I just want to enjoy life while also learning to be open about my feelings.

13. What are some tips you have learned the hard way?
How to do your eyeliner. I had so much trouble learning how to do that. I poked my eye so many times it started getting red. Also how to do contour i either looked too pale or too tan. Let me think. I also struggled with foundation. I didn’t have the right products so my skin would look very cakey and just bad overall.

14. What are some tips you learned from others?
A few tips I learned from Vogue secrets it’s to not put foundation, and to put a little bit of concealer on your eyelid and to never ever forget to put on sunscreen. The reason for rarely or to not put on foundation it’s because you have to be very skilled and have the perfect shade to put on. And sometimes if you live in a hot area it would just melt on your skin and that is a horrifying scene to look at. As for the concealer, I think it’s more if you are going for a smokey eye but you have to blend it in with your finger. Do I guess that’s also another tip, to blend your makeup with your fingers. The skin to skin contact makes it blend way nicer. And using  sunscreen it’s like the number one rule. It protects your skin obviously but also prevents wrinkles in the future.

15. How does makeup and skincare help you relieve stress?
I know that for a lot of people it can be toxic but for me it has never been that way, thank god. I feel like it’s because I  don’t do it for anyone other than me. I love to try new things in the comfort of my own home so there isn’t a specific audience I’m looking for. So when I do it it helps me release stress and it’s overall relaxing. Also with skincare it’s just so soothing to apply the products. And I look forward to doing it every morning and night. And Sunday’s I’ll have a reset day where I do everything showers and I just have fun by myself. So yeah it’s very relaxing and comforting to me.

16. Where is somewhere you can always be found?
Traveling or my room. Like I said I love traveling and it helps me reset from using technology. And I’m just looking at these different places. I just generally love being outside but I also love my room. I think I can find comfort anywhere as long as I have good company. Which sometimes I travel with my parents which is so fun. We go to museums and exhibits. So I can be anywhere honestly.

This was the interview, stay tuned for the next blog with the draft featured story!

SAMPLE INTERVIEW STORY

 Welcome back to the blog!

So today I wanted to show what my sample article looks like. This is practice for my actual article. I wanted to have some experience before writing my article so I know how to fix any errors that I might’ve experienced. I also wanted to learn how to approach the questions. And while writing the story I learned valuable lessons that I know will help for my magazine.
So here’s the article:

Life can get rough sometimes, for 16 year old Alexis Gamboa, it gets easier when she’s with people she loves.

She has people like her mom and her guy best friend to help her out.

Growing up, Gamboa had a rough time at home. From an early age she went from living with her parents to living with her grandmother for a while. She says “I don’t remember much past seven years old. But basically there were a lot of problems with my parents.” She doesn’t see this as a bad thing because her friends have made her realize that things happen and we can grow from them.

Alexis believes that being with her friends has made her think past the bad memories. For instance she recalls one of her favorite childhood memories. “There was this one time when I was 6 I was taken to my first Disney on ice” she continues “then after the show I walked out with a big smile on my face. It made me really happy.”

For Alexis, having good company is crucial, and Covid was an eye opening experience. “It made me think of friendships…It showed me who was real and who was not.” During this time everyone was struggling to keep going but for Alexis this made her think of who she wanted to surround herself with.

What’s interesting is that she made friends easily while doing what she loves; Band. Although she thinks there’s some stereotypes, she really enjoys doing this. But even better for her is she gets to do it with her friends. One specific place where you can find her is Checkers. She says “Me and my friends go there and talk about our problems or about anything.” She all around enjoys her friends' company, it brightens her day.

That’s  all for today, see you in the next blog!

CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 4

Hello everyone! Today I will be answering Compulsory question 4.   For this question I did a podcast episode posted on YouTube.  Name: San...
