FEATURED STORY INTERVIEW

 Hello blog!

Today I will show the answers to the questions from the previous blog. For my magazine story I interviewed my friend Helen Jurado. I thought she would be perfect for my magazine as she fits what I’m looking for. She was away at the moment and so therefore this interview had to be done through a phone call.

1. When do you think your liking for makeup and skincare began?
I think it started from a very young age. I used to go on my mom’s  room and use her makeup. And she would scold me and tell me I was too young. But I had a fascination with makeup. As for skincare I recently got into it and it’s been a complete life changer. I found that having good skin is what makes your makeup look better.

2. Who is your biggest inspiration when it comes to makeup?
I guess my mom. She also really likes makeup and her skin has always been perfect, I guess it’s probably just genetics but her skin is super smooth. And honestly I love to do different looks and show her and she would always say how much she likes them even when I feel like they didn’t come out as well.

3.  Which would you say is your favorite look?
Out of all the looks I’ve done I feel like the normal looks are always best. But there is this one time I wanted to try something new and I did like my eyeliner differently. It was specially for Halloween I think and I made my eyeliner look like a spider. It was so cute. There is also this one time I was randomly practicing different looks. And to me the best looks are the ones you barely try for. And so I did this like a mermaid inspired look and it turned out so cute. But all the pictures I took didn’t do it Justice.

4. What are some products that you know work?
Ok so I’m super into Korean skincare. I think they are absolutely amazing. And there are so many products that I could talk about. But I will say they can get very expensive so I also use regular Walmart skincare. I think if you want your skin to get better it’s best to not use so many products or introduce so many products because your skin isn’t used to them.

5. How would you describe your femininity?
I think being feminine is a complex thing. Many women have strong auras while others have more charming auras. For example I knew this one girl who was so confident she would walk to a room and you would just admire her. For me I think I’m more calm and relaxed but sort of outgoing. I can be bold but it’s not all the time. People always say I’m always smiling and laughing so I do feel like my femininity is more quiet and timid but I do think a lot of people would disagree with that. They would say I’m bold and extroverted. I just think women are just powerful beings like we can do anything so I’m glad that girls are not ashamed to be girly girls  or to be tomgirls.

6. What are the words that describe you?
Intelligent, skillful, and assertive. I think I’m very smart and others as well like to compliment me on that. I do believe I’m very skillful. I like to learn new things. I feel like you get to only live once and you have to get the most out of it. And assertive because I can give criticism in a way that 's clear and I’m a very good speaker.

7. Would you consider makeup one of your favorite activities?
Oh no, as I said before I love to try new things. Although I love makeup and skincare I always like to do something out of my comfort zone. For example horse riding. Horses are one of my favorite animals, possibly the only animals I love as much as anything. I just have a way to communicate with them and horses like me like I can talk to them and they would be happy to be around me. Don’t get me wrong, I love animals. I think they are adorable but horses do have my heart. I also love stargazing. I know this isn’t a skill but I love to dry somewhere where there is no light pollution and just look up at the stars, it’s really soothing. Oh I also love love love traveling. I actually have plane tickets to visit my brother soon which I’m really excited about.

8. How much do you think you have improved in this activity?
With makeup oh I’ve improved tremendously like when I first began I didn’t know how to use the right brushes or knew the name of anything. I was confused on what foundation and concealer was. I used to do my eyebrows really weird and it didn’t match my color at all. But I think over the years specially during covid I had time to improve and I’ve definitely come a long way.

9. Which color palettes do you think looks best on you?
I think I look best in pastels and I think it ranges. If it’s like a regular day and I’m going out colors can be neutral and light. But if it’s a party and it’s at night I would use darker tones. But since I wear pastels and lighter colors most of the time I would say those colors look best on me.

10. Do you have a busy schedule, if so, how do you manage to fit in your favorite hobbies?
I think since I’m homeschooled I have time for more travel so my schedule is busy. I usually travel a lot which I’m grateful for of course. And when I’m home I use that time to do my hobbies like makeup and horse riding. But also when I’m traveling I also find ways to incorporate those activities into my week once or twice.

11. Would you say you have specific makeup looks for different occasions?
Definitely. I love to look at makeup and skincare tutorials. For example Vogue secrets I love to learn different tips from famous gorgeous people. So if I’m home I’ll do some blush, highlighter and eyeshadow and lip tint. But if I’m going out with friends I go a little more bold but also calm. And if I’m going to Walmart or the mall I’ll try a more natural look. And of course it varies. I try not to do the same thing twice when I’m out. I’m always trying different products so I can’t possibly do the same thing twice.

12. What are your plans for the summer?
To have fun honestly. I recently turned eighteen and I’m ready to be out there in the world and experience life. There's still a few things I’m afraid of but I think I can learn to conquer them. This summer I want to focus on my happiness. Past years I’ve had a lot of things going on and now I just want to enjoy life while also learning to be open about my feelings.

13. What are some tips you have learned the hard way?
How to do your eyeliner. I had so much trouble learning how to do that. I poked my eye so many times it started getting red. Also how to do contour i either looked too pale or too tan. Let me think. I also struggled with foundation. I didn’t have the right products so my skin would look very cakey and just bad overall.

14. What are some tips you learned from others?
A few tips I learned from Vogue secrets it’s to not put foundation, and to put a little bit of concealer on your eyelid and to never ever forget to put on sunscreen. The reason for rarely or to not put on foundation it’s because you have to be very skilled and have the perfect shade to put on. And sometimes if you live in a hot area it would just melt on your skin and that is a horrifying scene to look at. As for the concealer, I think it’s more if you are going for a smokey eye but you have to blend it in with your finger. Do I guess that’s also another tip, to blend your makeup with your fingers. The skin to skin contact makes it blend way nicer. And using  sunscreen it’s like the number one rule. It protects your skin obviously but also prevents wrinkles in the future.

15. How does makeup and skincare help you relieve stress?
I know that for a lot of people it can be toxic but for me it has never been that way, thank god. I feel like it’s because I  don’t do it for anyone other than me. I love to try new things in the comfort of my own home so there isn’t a specific audience I’m looking for. So when I do it it helps me release stress and it’s overall relaxing. Also with skincare it’s just so soothing to apply the products. And I look forward to doing it every morning and night. And Sunday’s I’ll have a reset day where I do everything showers and I just have fun by myself. So yeah it’s very relaxing and comforting to me.

16. Where is somewhere you can always be found?
Traveling or my room. Like I said I love traveling and it helps me reset from using technology. And I’m just looking at these different places. I just generally love being outside but I also love my room. I think I can find comfort anywhere as long as I have good company. Which sometimes I travel with my parents which is so fun. We go to museums and exhibits. So I can be anywhere honestly.
